There's plenty of assholes out there tipping 0%. It's a good thing to remember that those who work for tips often get screwed over and often live in poverty or near to it.

I was tipped 0% plenty of times as a bartender. Got told to find a real job plenty of times. It sucks.

Yes, but the actual person who was there that day left a decent tip.

Sure. But the reason people were pissed off wasn't because it was a unique incident.

By the same token, there are plenty of assholes out there that deserve a 0% tip. Just saying for me, the "get a real job" is far more egregious than a bad tip.

There are very few servers who deserve a 0% tip. Guys that bad are normally fired, or the meal didn't deserve to be paid for either. The ratio of fucking awful customers compared to waiters is severely unbalanced; many more asshole customers.

Some people think a server deserves to be docked tips just because food was late, order got messed up, etc. It's really goddamn stupid thinking. Do people get docked at work when they mess up? No. They'll get fired if they fuck up too often. Same as servers.

I don't think I have ever left a 0% tip, but I have come damn close a couple times. My average is 20% and has gone over 100% for fantastic service. Hell I once had a waiter drop a bowl of chili all over my back but I still tipped 20% because he was a nice guy, apologetic and did everything he could to make it right.

But there are plenty of wait staff that are rude, dismissive, or quite frankly just don't do there job. If I have to ask for something multiple times and don't get it and see my waitperson just shooting the shit with the bartender, their tip goes down. Likening that to docking their pay is ridiculous, I am not their boss, I can not fire them, and other than complaining to a manager which I won't do, It's the best way I have to let them know I am dissatisfied. Or maybe I should tip well and then complain to their manager and possibly get them fired, would that be better?

I know if someone is consistently bad at their job they will probably get fired, I also know that everyone has bad days and quite frankly, that isn't my problem. If I get a cranky waiter who is rude and ignores me because he had a flat tire on the way to work, his boss chewed him out and he is late on his rent payment, I feel sorry for him, but he ain't getting a full tip.

If you spend your time nickle-and-diming, nothing I say is going to make any impression.

Yep.

I also know that everyone has bad days and quite frankly, that isn't my problem.

When you have a bad day and are cranky at work, does your pay get docked?

Nope, but I may very well lose a client, which is why I do my damnedest not to be cranky at work. I have had clients refuse to pay bills if they didn't think my service was satisfactory. It hasn't happened often, and if they had a fair complaint I will adjust the bill accordingly. It sucks, but I learn to be more responsive to my clients needs so it doesn't happen again.

I'll say it again, I am not their boss, docking pay is not a valid metaphor. I am a client paying them for a service. If I don't receive that service, why should I pay for it?

Which is illegal, unless you violated the contract.

You're entirely responsible for that, though. The waiter is only in a very small part responsible for your meal experience.

I'll say it again, I am not their boss, docking pay is not a valid metaphor. I am a client paying them for a service. If I don't receive that service, why should I pay for it?

Because you do receive the service. You're complaining about the quality of the service, not the absence of it. You also receive a lot of service from them you don't realize. A lot of what servers do is 'sidework', polishing the silver, setting the tables, even prep work for the meals. You have no idea if the dude who just just shit-tipped is tired and cranky because everyone else showed up late and he had to do all the sidework himself.

This is why tipping is stupid-- it gives people the stupid idea that they're supposed to use tips to somehow pay for a service received. 90% of what waiters do the customers never see.
